Archie Houston

Royal Marines Football Association 1967 – 1971 

Archie joined the Corps in March 1965 and served for 7 years before leaving in 1972. He played football for the Royal Marines from 1967 until 1971. During this time he won medals for the Inter Command Cup twice, in 1968 & 1970, Tunney Cup in 1968 for Depot RM, China Shield for 40 Cdo beating HMS Simbang 4-3 (the last one prior to leaving Singapore), the Navy Cup and he also represented the Royal Navy and Combined Services Far East teams.

The Combined Services fixture was a one off game against the Indonesian National squad in their four match preparation for the Asian games. They were undefeated until they played against the Combined Services team at the National stadium (televised) and the CS beat them 4-1, Archie and Mick Woods both 40 Cdo represented the Royal Navy contingent. Archie recalls a four line spread in the Straits Times which read “Jaded Indonesian team beaten by Combined Service team” and this was after they had full page spreads when they were winning. Archie now lives in Canada.
